Se trata del artista jamaicano clásico que más actúa en directo hoy en dia. Desde que volvió a los escenarios, en 2007, ha editado cuatro discos en tres continentes diferentes y actuando por todo el mundo, incluyendo paises como Japón, Méjico, USA, Colombia y por supuesto por todos los rincones de Europa.

Un poco de historia:

Hubo un dia en que Roy Ellis decidió dejar Symarip para dedicarse a la música gospel y soul, movió su residencia a Suiza y forjó una carrera exitosa con apariciones en la televisión suiza siendo su presencia solicitada en los eventos más grandes de la escena local. El resto de Symarip no duró mucho tiempo más sin su cantante, compositor y líder, todos dejaron la música excepto Monty Nyesmith que siguió su carrera en EE. UU.

Roy Ellis, que llevaba cantando gospel desde su más tierna infancia en Jamaica, comenzó tocando el trombón en The Bees, un grupo de instituto creado por los que más tarde serían The Pyramids o Symarip (leído al revés). Pero pronto dejó el trombón para dedicarse a cantar y componer en la banda, sus dotes de líder eran indiscutibles. Previamente Roy Ellis ya había grabado unos cuantos singles rodeándose de otros grandes artistas, por entonces no tan famosos, como Ernest Ranglin, Rico, Eddie Tan Tan, Sonny Bourke, Georgie Fame y un largo etcétera, en los sellos que empezaban a lanzar música jamaicana en UK como Ember, Bluebeat, Creole, Attack, Jay Boy, Treasure Sile, Rhino, Duke, President, Dr. Bird ó Trojan así como multinacionales como Ariola ó EMI.

Laurel Aitken era el artista jamaicano más importante residente en Inglaterra a finales de los 60 y su labor de embajador fue vital para nuevo sonido Reggae que estaba naciendo. Apadrinó a The Pyramids y les utilizó como banda para llevar de gira al Reino Unido a los nuevos artistas que estaban rompiendo en Jamaica: Prince Buster, Toots & The Maytals, The Ethiopians, Owen Gray, Desmond Dekker, Millie, Jackie Edwards, etc. y al mismo Laurel Aitken, por supuesto. Laurel grabó algunos éxitos con The Pyramids, que fueron publicados en Blue Beat, como ‘Jesee James’ ó ‘Because I Love You’.

En 1967 fue Eddy Grant, poco despues de disolver The Equals, quien trabajó estrechamente con The Pyramids grabando algunos clásicos como ‘Train Tour To Rainbow City’ y el primer LP del grupo. Ellos no dejaban de actuar y grabar en estudio con jóvenes artistas que estaban triunfando en Jamaica, si te fijas en los créditos de algunos discos de la época verás The Pyramids entre los músicos de sesión de algunos discos de Desmond Dekker o el LP de Millie ‘Time Will Tell’, ese que sale sentada encima de una banana.

Pero el verdadero zambombazo lo dieron en 1969, ya como Symarip, con el disco Skinhead Moonstomp, publicado por Trojan Records, llegando a vender más de siete millones de copias hasta nuestros dias, nunca se ha descatalogado, siempre ha estado en los primeros puestos de ventas de las listas de Reggae durante casi 40 años. Trojan ha vendido más copias de este disco que de cualquier otro título de su catálogo, incluyendo discos de Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff o Desmond Dekker.

El último concierto que Laurel Aitken dio en Suiza fue en 2004, Roy Ellis llevaba más de veinte años alejado de la escena Reggae pero no pudo faltar a la cita, llevaba desde 1966 sin reencontrarse con Laurel y fue a verle a los camerinos. Cuando se encontraron se dieron un fuerte abrazo y Laurel se puso a llorar de la emoción. Empezó a decirle a Roy: tienes que volver al Reggae, hay un montón de fans esperándote, todos quieren oír tus viejas canciones. En la habitación había unos cuantos fans preguntando por fotos y autógrafos y Laurel se dirigió a ellos diciendo: “¿Sabéis quién es este tipo? es Roy Ellis, Mr. Symarip! el que escribió Must Catch A Train, Banana, Stay With Him, etc.! Y vive aquí, en vuestra ciudad!”.

A la semana siguiente aquel grupo de fans había localizado la casa de Roy Ellis y llamó a la puerta con la intención de convencerle para que volviera a la escena Reggae, tras las presentaciones y varias horas de conversaciones Roy Ellis llegó a la conclusión: “si el público quiere verme no puedo fallarle”. En ese momento se produjo la vuelta al Reggae de Roy Ellis, Mr. Symarip, y desde entonces, en un período de sólo tres años ha publicado un LP en tres continentes distintos y ha actuado por Suiza, Alemania, Austria, Holanda, España, Grecia, República Checa, Polonia, Japón, EE. UU., Colombia, Mexico, Portugal, etc, etc.

Los temas de su disco de retorno a los escenarios son ya clásicos de Reggae que el público corea en los conciertos que ofrece por todo el mundo como si fueran los clásicos de 1969. Despues de algunos conciertos Roy Ellis, todavía sorprendido por el rotundo triunfo, comenta a los más íntimos: “soy una estrella del Reggae y no lo sabía, ¡cómo he podido vivir sin saberlo todos estos años!”.

It sponsored to The Pyramids and used them as a band on tour to the United Kingdom to new artists who were breaking in Jamaica: Prince Buster, Toots & The Maytals, The Ethiopians, Owen Gray, Desmond Dekker, Millie, Jackie Edwards, etc. and the same Laurel Aitken, of course. Laurel recorded some successes with The Pyramids, which were published in Blue Beat, such as 'Jesse James' or 'Because I Love You'.

In 1967 was Eddy Grant, shortly after to dissolve The Equals, who worked closely with The Pyramids recording classics such as 'Train Tour To Rainbow City' and the first LP from the group. They wouldn't Act and recorded in Studio with young artists who were triumphing in Jamaica, if you look at the credits of some discs of the time you'll see The Pyramids from session musicians of some discs of Desmond Dekker or Millie 'Time Will Tell', this LP coming out sitting on top of a banana.

The following week that group of fans had located the House of Roy Ellis and knocked on the door with the intention of convincing him to return to the Reggae scene, following the presentations and several hours of conversations Roy Ellis came to the conclusion: "If the audience wants to see me not I fail you". Return to the Reggae of Roy Ellis, Mr. has occurred in that time and since then, in a period of only three years it has released an LP on three different continents and has acted for Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Czech Republic, Poland, Japan, USA. USA, Colombia, Mexico, Portugal, etc, etc.
