Roy Ellis (Mr. Simaryp)
Apadrinó a The Pyramids y les
estaban rompiendo en Jamaica: Prince Buster, Toots & The Maytals, The Ethiopians,
publicados en Blue Beat, como ‘Jesee James’ ó ‘Because I Love You’.
The Pyramids grabando algunos clásicos como ‘Train Tour To Rainbow City’ y el
Marley, Jimmy Cliff o Desmond Dekker.
Stay With Him, etc.!
UU., Colombia,
Mexico, Portugal, etc, etc.

It's the
classic Jamaican artist that most acts live today in day. Since he returned to
the stage, in 2007, he has released four albums on three different continents
and acting all over the world, including countries such as Japan, Mexico, USA,
Colombia, and of course by all corners of Europe.
A little
history:
There was a
day when Roy Ellis decided to quit has to devote himself to music, gospel and
soul, moved his residence to Switzerland and forged a successful career with
the Swiss television appearances being his presence requested at the largest
events in the local scene. The rest of has not lasted long time more without
their singer, composer and bandleader, all let the music except for Monty
Nyesmith who continued his career in the United States. UU.
Roy Ellis,
who had been singing gospel since his early childhood in Jamaica, began playing
the trombone at The Bees, a group of Institute created by those who later would
be The Pyramids or has (read backwards). But soon left to devote himself to
sing and compose the band trombone, leader qualities were undisputed.
Previously Roy Ellis had already recorded a few singles surrounding himself
with other great artists, then not so famous, as Ernest Ranglin, Rico, Eddie
Tan Tan, Sonny Bourke, Georgie Fame and a long etcetera in the seals that began
releasing Jamaican music in the UK such as Ember, Bluebeat, Creole, Attack, Jay
Boy, Treasure Sile, Rhino, Duke, President, Dr. Bird or Trojan as well as
multinational as Ariola or EMI.
Laurel
Aitken was the most important Jamaican artist resident in England at the end of
the 1960s and his work of Ambassador was vital for new Reggae Sound that was
being born. It sponsored to The Pyramids and used them as a band on tour to the
United Kingdom to new artists who were breaking in Jamaica: Prince Buster,
Toots & The Maytals, The Ethiopians, Owen Gray, Desmond Dekker, Millie,
Jackie Edwards, etc. and the same Laurel Aitken, of course. Laurel recorded
some successes with The Pyramids, which were published in Blue Beat, such as
'Jesse James' or 'Because I Love You'.
In 1967 was
Eddy Grant, shortly after to dissolve The Equals, who worked closely with The
Pyramids recording classics such as 'Train Tour To Rainbow City' and the first
LP from the group. They wouldn't Act and recorded in Studio with young artists
who were triumphing in Jamaica, if you look at the credits of some discs of the
time you'll see The Pyramids from session musicians of some discs of Desmond
Dekker or Millie 'Time Will Tell', this LP coming out sitting on top of a
banana.
But given
the real bombshell in 1969, already has, as with the album Skinhead Moonstomp,
released by Trojan Records, selling over seven million copies until our days,
never has been discontinued, it has always been in the first positions of the
Reggae charts sales for almost 40 years. Trojan has sold more copies of this
album than any other title in its catalog, including Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff or
Desmond Dekker discs.
The last
concert given by Laurel Aitken in Switzerland was in 2004, Roy Ellis had more
than twenty years away from the Reggae scene but he could not miss the
appointment, had since 1966 without reunited with Laurel and was to see him in
the dressing rooms. When found were given a big hug and Laurel began to cry of
emotion. He began to say to Roy: you have to go back to Reggae, there are a lot
of fans waiting for you, everyone wants to hear your old songs. The room had a
few fans asking for photos and autographs and Laurel addressed them saying: 'do
you know who is this type? It is Roy Ellis, Mr. has! you wrote Must Catch A
Train, Banana, Stay With Him, etc.! And here, live in your city! "."
The
following week that group of fans had located the House of Roy Ellis and
knocked on the door with the intention of convincing him to return to the
Reggae scene, following the presentations and several hours of conversations
Roy Ellis came to the conclusion: "If the audience wants to see me not I
fail you". Return to the Reggae of Roy Ellis, Mr. has occurred in that
time and since then, in a period of only three years it has released an LP on
three different continents and has acted for Switzerland, Germany, Austria,
Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Czech Republic, Poland, Japan, USA. USA, Colombia,
Mexico, Portugal, etc, etc.
The themes
of their album, return to the stage are already classic reggae public Korea
concerts offered by everyone as if they were the classics from 1969. After some
gigs Roy Ellis, still surprised by the resounding victory, says the more
intimate: "I am a Reggae star and did not know it, as I have been able to
live without knowing it all these years!"
